An extremely agitated Steve Gonzales waited in an interrogation room down the hall from the lockup. He was exhausted and scared. The last few weeks had been a series of one shocking revelation after another. He felt like he was watching his life fall completely to pieces. Two of his friends were dead, and Lonny didn’t have much to look forward to. Being here for questioning again after initially being interviewed by the GAO auditor and then the state’s investigators was not helping his state of mind. Steve was beginning to wish he had never heard of Blake Masters. That convincing son of a bitch could talk the pope into becoming a Jew.

Blake and Lonny were his coworkers and friends for years; but he regretted having gone on that fateful fishing trip with them and, once there, regretted being influenced by their enthusiastic description of all the money they were making on the side.

He hardly slept over the past week and could not keep his eyes open. His chin dropped to his chest just as the door opened and Special Agent Cheryl St. Pierre entered the room, followed by the sheriff. They sat down on the other side of the table from Gonzales and stared at him. Then St. Pierre leaned toward him and introduced herself, smiling sweetly. Glossy pink lipstick complemented her pretty face and perfectly matched the shiny satin blouse, which her suit jacket did not conceal. Gonzales stared back at her wide-eyed.

“Are you napping here, Steve?” she asked, smiling good-naturedly, and leaned back in her seat. She tilted her head in a slightly flirtatious manner, and Carmichael stared at her curiously. “I’d think you would be a little more concerned about your situation than to be falling asleep,” she added.

The agent’s sweet feminine tone comforted and relaxed him. “I haven’t been able to sleep much. I’ve been worried about Lonny . . . and the others.”

“I guess you would be.” St. Pierre casually ran through a series of questions framed from the standpoint that they already knew all about his illegal activity with Blake and the others. Gonzales became increasingly worried, and by the time she was finished, he was downright frightened all over again. He maintained his innocence throughout the questioning, saying he didn’t know what they were talking about.

He tried to ignore the strange woman and pleaded with Carmichael, “Sheriff, you gotta believe I had nothing to do with what happened to those guys. I swear I don’t know anything about the guns either.”

Suddenly, St. Pierre reached over the table and poked her finger into Gonzales’s chest. “Why do you think Blake, Gene, and Lonny were targeted? I mean, what do they have in common with each other and in common with you, Steve?” Her sudden unexpected change in demeanor and hostile tone caught both Gonzales and Carmichael off guard.

“I swear I don’t know anything,” he whined. His voice broke, and he loudly cleared his throat. “Can I get some water, please?”

She waved her hand in the air.
